Fact Check: Zagreb Authorities Are NOT Evicting Citizens From Their Apartments To Accommodate Migrants Not Evicting

Are authorities in Zagreb evicting Croatian citizens in order to turn over their apartments to migrants? No, that's not true: City officials do not have the authority to evict private property owners. The Croatian government can provide a migrant who is currently under international protection with a state-owned apartment only if it is not currently occupied.

The claim appeared in a video on TikTok (archived here) published by user katarina4618 on October 21, 2023, with the caption (translated from Croatian to English by Lead Stories staff):

They are lying like dogs. They are still waiting to decorate my apartments. They are arriving too fast, you can not evict Croatian citizens out of their apartments in such a short period, so that this scum, that will rape and kill us tomorrow, can move in.

Zagreb city officials do not have the legal authority to evict private property owners. They may instead provide state-owned apartments to people in Croatia who are under international protection, such as asylum seekers, refugees and migrants.

Based on the decision of the recognition of the right to housing, the Central State Office for Reconstruction and Housing is obliged to provide housing for persons who have been granted international protection in housing units owned by the Republic of Croatia or housing units used by the Office based on a lease agreement with third parties.

The European Union has provided funding to Croatia to allocate to the housing needs of asylum seekers that has allowed for 64 apartments to be renovated and furnished in several Croatian cities.

The TikTok account katarina4618 is known to promote misinformation, such as that Pfizer vaccine contains graphene oxide (archived here), that global warming is a lie (archived here) and that 5G activates pathogens from the COVID-19 vaccines in the human body (archived here). Lead Stories previously debunked the claim by this account that the HAARP facility is in Petrova Gora in Croatia.
